Join me in supporting the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition
“Feeding people is just a way of getting to know who they are."
- Ted Landreth, Co-Founder of the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition (GHWFC)
Three years ago, I had a strong desire to take responsibility for my community and began searching for volunteer opportunities in the Los Angeles area. I found the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition and, in turn, a greater purpose for my life. Through the years, I have become a lead cook, volunteered substantial time, joined the Board of Directors, and have recently taken on the position of VP and volunteer coordinator. I have found compelling mentors in my fellow volunteers and am continually fueled and inspired by the people we serve.
The GWHFC is a grassroots organization that does for the LA homeless community what nobody else is doing. 365 days a year, we prepare and serve a hot and nutritious meal for anyone who is hungry and wants to come eat. All the ingredients we prepare are donated by local catering companies, restaurants and grocery stores and would otherwise be thrown away. We collect and repurpose these resources everyday in our rented kitchen space, and then move to a designated street corner where we distribute absolutely everything to a community in great need, serving an average of 200 people per day.
Most of the people we serve are living in a sequential crisis, struggling to find support. Even with government assistance programs, people don't have enough money to eat. During daily meal service, GWHFC volunteers forge individual relationships with clients to identify their needs. Great efforts are then made to support those needs and I have personally witnessed substantial change. Some recent examples of these special services include:
- Providing free healthcare via the UCLA medical mobile clinic
- Distributing hygiene kits and various medical supplies
- Replacing items that have been stolen
- Purchasing phone cards to contact family, etc.
- Job training and search support
- Permanent supportive housing placement
Considering the amount of people we reach, operating expenses are extremely low. That being said, the organization is struggling month to month to fund it's efforts. I believe wholeheartedly in the impact of the GWHFC, and hope you will join me in supporting the important work of this organization by making a contribution.
